Abstract EN

This study aims at understanding the capital adequacy standard and demonstrating the importance of compliance with it.

It also aims to know the extent of the Algerian banking system's compliance with this standard and to highlight the challenges it faces to do, as well as to find ways to activate its implementation.

This study concluded that despite the difficult challenges of weak capital base and technological level, bad loans, the nature of the Algerian banking environment and the lack of consistency with the rules of the Basel Committee, there are ways that could be taken to activate it by increasing the capital of Algerian banks and improving their solidity, seeking accession of the Bank of Algeria to the Basel Committee, the issuance of stricter instructions on risk measurement, the adoption of advanced technology, the preparation of training programs for staff involved with the Basel Committee's directives, and the observance of the principle of disclosure by banks
