Abstract EN

This study aims at explaining the state of affairs of the agricultural sector in Algeria by comprehending available natural and economic resources, adopted agricultural policies and ongoing developments in agricultural production, in addition to highlighting the contribution of the agricultural sector to achieve food security.

For these purposes, the analytical-descriptive approach is applied through a set of tools such as tables, statistical data and annual reports on agricultural production developments and its impact on food security according to the indicators of available consumption and self-sufficiency ratios.

This study found that despite the fundamentals of agricultural activity in Algeria and the succession of reform programs to boost the agricultural sector, the latter still applies traditional methods to use available resources and implement the production process, preventing it from achieving the target growth of agricultural production to meet the rising demand on food, forcing Algeria to import most of the food products and placing it in an external food dependency
