Abstract EN

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of semantic mapping strategy in improving English Vocabulary Achievement and Long-term Retention of these words.

The study adopted a quasi-experimental design employing two groups (experimental and control group).

The sample of the study consisted of 49 sixth grade students in Omar Bin Saleem Elementary School in Buraydah.

The tool for this research was an achievement test whose validity and reliability was verified.

It was applied as pre-test, post-test and delayed test in both groups to measure the achievement of vocabulary.

The data was analyzed by the arithmetic means, standard deviations, analysis of covariance (ancova) and T-test.

The delayed test was applied after three weeks to measure long-term retention of vocabulary and data was analyzed by Ttest.

The study results showed that there was statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the experimental (25.56) and control group (20.62) in post-test in favor of experimental group.

Also, there was no statically significant difference between post-test (25.56) and delayed test (25.48) mean for the experimental group in favor of post-test.

These results revealed that semantic mapping strategy has a positive effect on both English vocabulary achievement and long-term retention.
