Abstract EN

This study is concerned with an investigation of words that are said to be both masculinized and feminized.

The first step is to explore the nature of the word in dictionaries and thesauruses in order to find out how it is formulated in the linguistic system.

The second step is to explore the actual use of the word in the Arabic heritage including the glorious Quran, the Prophetic tradition 9even the prophet’s companions’ speeches), His progeny’s tradition, the Arabic poetry until the Abbasid Age and the speech of the earlier Islamic scholars and Quranic interpreters.

This comprehensive and all-covering research enables us to find out neat answers to highly serious questions on the nature of such words.in this paper, we present only one example in which the word ‘Ibham ابهام ’ = ‘Thumb’ where it is systematically investigated according to the survey method adopted in this scrutiny.

This research paper is a part of a comprehensive project in which 150 words or lexemes are tackled to find out their root use and how it is different from lexicographical theorization.
