Most scholars of Islam said that counting the verses of the Holy Qur’an is a matter of tawqeef (textual evidence), and this is the mainstream opinion that is believed to be exclusive by a number of Shari’a students.

It is also one of reasons for writing the paper.

The importance of knowing the heads of Qur’anic verses is clearly apparent in many practices such as the pursuit of the virtues of deeds in prayer and in other matters, as well as in some aspects of Qur’anic readings, in the miraculousness of the Qur’an, in prophetic endowment, and so on.

Due its great importance, the companions, the followers and those who came after them were careful to learn it and know about it, to the point that some of them used to join their fingers in prayer to count verses.

A methodical study is therefore needed to identify the sources of counting.

The study reviewed the three hypotheses regarding the source of Qur’anic verse counting, including tawqeef, Ijtihad (juristic opinion) and tawqeef supported with Ijtihad, referring opinions to their advocators, examining their proofs and exposing them in detail.

The author listed fourteen proofs advocating tawqeef, eight proofs advocating tawqeef supported with Ijtihad, and three proofs advocating Ijtihad only.

Each proof was discussed in a scientific way by explaining its strengths and weaknesses and showing the extent to which it can be used for correct illustration.

The study concluded by opting for the hypothesis of those who advocated tawqeef supported with Ijtihad as thoroughly elucidated in the discussion.
