Abstract EN

The ecosystems of Jubail marine wildlife sanctuary in general and especially Alfrea fisheries are considered one of the most important ecosystems in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia.

however, productivity and sustainability are threatened due to exposure to several pressures.

the present study is concerned with the possibility of applying ecosystem-based management on fisheries resources of the Jubail marine wildlife sanctuary.

two questionnaires have been prepared for this purpose according to the five stages of the ecosystem approach.

the first was aimed to decision-makers sample and the second to fishermen sample.

the results were statistically analyzed using SPSS program.

the results showed that some principles of the ecosystem approach are applied in management of Alfrea fisheries such as allocate of fishing grounds and fishing gears and surveillance.

on the other hand, the fishermen are not involved neither in decisions making nor in training on modern fishing gears.

approximately 946 of decisionmakers sample alerted that overfishing characterized the current exploitation of fisheries, which confirmed by 366 of the fishermen sample.

no attempt has been made on fish stock assessment for the commercial species.

the study recommended on the necessity of fishermen participation in the decisions making related to fisheries management and to be involved in training workshops on modern fishing gears.

moreover, fishing closed season to be adopted based on fish stock assessment studies and to cooperate with neighbouring countries to manage shared fish stocks.
