Abstract EN

Certain grand narratives appear to have influenced the circulation of the debate around the history of the origins of Egyptian and Arab theatre.

It is noteworthy that the writing of history and the theorizing about the origins of theatre in Egypt and the Arab world were associated with the way the narrative of this history was written, as in two ways.

One narrative claims that the theatre was not known in the Arab world except through Western influences by translation.

This view neglects that theatre started in Egypt from ancient times, even though it was not under such name.

It is noteworthy that modern theories dealing with the writing of history are questioning the possibility of the substantive writing of history without ideologies or bias.

Historiography of the Arab theatre seems to have been affected by the hegemonic thought that once dominated the making of culture and knowledge, and thus the circulation of certain meta-narratives, or grand narratives, which are concerned with the superiority of Western knowledge.

This article performs metacriticism of the critical discourse about the history of theatre in the Arab world and the way in which it was affected by certain grand narratives.

The research deals with the relationship between the grand or meta-narratives and the translation of the theatre and its impact on the production and circulation of knowledge about the origin of the theatre in Egypt and the Arab world from the nineteenth century
