Abstract EN

Both the concept and origin of Waqf was associated with charitable work.

The nature of Waqf evolved in relation to the developments witnessed by the Islamic community, where Waqf became responsible for securing many of the society’s needs; roads, Bimaristans, bridges, in addition to religious and educational institutions.

Scientific life, also, benefited largely from the efforts of Waqfiyeen (people who provide Waqf), particularly in the field of schools and libraries, which were sponsored by the Abbasid caliphs, state leaders and wealthy people, who allocated money to participate in constructing those institutions.

In addition to the construction of schools, Waqfiyeen provided all necessary educational materials; books, inkstands, writing tablets, as well as housing, food and clothing for students and teachers.

Due to the abundance of Waqf and its importance, a Nather (administer) was assigned to manage it and ensure its continuation.

The role of Waqf in education was not merely financial; it rather had a controlling role.

The Waqf document was as an official bylaw of the educational institution.

It included the educational fundamentals, the conditions which must be met by the teaching staff, study dates and the rights and duties of the learner and the teacher.
