The principle of the responsibility to protect is a principle that establishes a strategy adopted by the international community at the 2005 World Summit to address the most serious threats the human security of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.

The principle of the responsibility to protect enshrines the sovereign responsibility of a State to protect its population against such crimes and, in the event that the State is unable or unwilling in the protection of its population promotes the responsibility of the international community exercised by it through the United Nations and under the provisions of international law.
