English Abstract

A well-designed city is interconnected with landmarks, districts, paths, edges, and nodes (1960 Lynch), ultimately to form the visual, aesthetic and functional build environment.

The traffic routes are vital artery and the main component of the city and a link between different monuments of different types, functions and locations that directly affect the nature of tourism.

The vital traffic routes comprise the city's tourist attractions for large segments of the local and non-local population.

The access mechanism to the city is also a vital and attractive value added to its development.

In the city of Gaza, attention to traffic routes is not strong enough to indicate its importance inside the city, as it connects attraction centers and urban spaces that have interesting and effective activities to visitor.

Instead of the optimal use of such spaces by walking, more vehicles are used.

People of the city go, for self-leisure, to the beach or to distant parks and closed spaces instead.

In this context, this study aims to answer a key question: How can Gaza City be developed through domestic tourism that is based on the development of traffic routes to make the city an attractive one to live in, and make it attracting to visitors from outside the city? This study focuses on highlighting the effective role of traffic routes among the main parts to be reflected positively on the human being and to achieve wellbeing as well as the functional benefits that facilitate daily life.

The study uses the descriptive and analytical approaches, through a set of design standards derived from previous research studies, as well as through interviews with the specialists relevant to Omar Al-Mukhtar Street, extending from Al-Rasheed Street to Al-Sheja’ia Square, as a model for a main street connecting important attraction centers in the city.

One of the most important findings of this study is that Omar Al-Mukhtar Street in Gaza City is one of the most important commercial streets of the city, which connects various attractions of different functions that meet the humanitarian needs of all segments of society.

However, it lacks the design standards of the main natural and synthetic elements and components that it must have.

The percentage is almost 50% between the good and bad design standards applied in routes.

Therefore, the law must be applied and charges should be imposed by the concerned authorities to evaluate human behavior.

There should also be legal accountability for every legal body whether municipalities or ministries that may work contrary to the law.

Legal authorities should also be urged to work on using technology and connecting GPS applications on mobile phones to identify places and spaces easily.

This study presents a number of solutions, recommendations and proposals aiming at developing attractive tourist routes.

It also offers practical suggestions on how to implement this development on the ground through some real models.
