Abstract EN

The present study aimed to identify the level of emotional intelligence in the second year secondary school students, as well as to reveal the relationship between educational achievement and emotional intelligence among students in the second year secondary school.

In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher asked the following questions: 1- What is the level of emotional intelligence in the second year secondary students? 2- Is there a relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement for students of the second year secondary? 3- Are there differences between the grades of second year secondary students in emotional intelligence between students of high achievement and low achievement? The study was based on a descriptive analytical method as the appropriate method.

The study was conducted on a sample of 120 students of the second year secondary students (380 students) who are present in Cherif Messaadia Secondary School in Msila, Algeria for the academic year 2016/2017, the sample was randomized.

In order to collect the data, the researcher applied the emotional intelligence scale of Abd al-Hadi and Othman Farouk ( 2002 ) after adapting it to the Algerian environment and calculating its psychometric characteristics.

It also relied on the average of the students in the term exams through the various courses they studied during the academic year 2016/2017 The study found the following results: -The level of emotional intelligence in the study sample is very high.

-There is no correlation between emotional intelligence and academic achievement in the study sample.

-There were statistically significant differences at the level of (0.01) between high and low scholastic achievement in the total score of emotion intelligence and the differences were in favor of high achievement levels.
