Abstract EN

Through this s sttudy we intend to identify the tribe of the Houareth and provide information about geographic position, the number of its inhabitants, its economic activities and the main resources as well as its landownings.

To tackle these issues we refer to the archives of BirKhadem in Algiers and those of Aix-En- Provence in France.

In this latter there are important information dealing with the matter of land expropriation from the indigenous people of Algeria that had been applied by the French to meet the need of the new incoming colonists.

Thus the Houareth tribe, like others in Algeria, had been concerned by the application of the French law named SenatusConsultus issued in March 15, 1889 that imposed the geographic limitation ending with the expropriation of thousands of hectares of lands belonging to the Houareth among them the forest lands which reached 15146 hectares.

These lands were added to the estates of the French in Algeria.

While expropriating 2000 hectares of fertile lands situated in the Ettat plain to set up colonies near the mixed commune of Frenda, the French policy aiming at the expropriation of more lands had met a violent opposition from this tribe.

The Houareth were compelled either to buy these lands with the prices imposed by the French or to take up infertile lands in the region of Dir El Keff in southern Frenda.
