Contrary to clergy men and philosophers who in their attempts to construct and cognitively define “co-existence”, relied on ideological and doctrine-biased backgrounds, which caused conflict and dispute; Mahy Eddine Ibn Arabi, the Father of Sufism attempted to give the concept of “co-existence” a mystical and spiritual dimension.
Furthermore, he aimed to embody “co-existence” in human relations through “unity” believing that its essence is divine.
In this sense, Ibn Arabi believed that unity transcends Sectarianism which dominated the ideologies of philosophers and scholars alike.
In addition, he argued that love which generates from “unity”, gathers the different doctrines, creeds, differences and ideologies under its umbrella resulting in the co-existing between them and, hence, the unity of all mankind.
Notably, the unity of mankind is dependent on three factors.
In this regard, this unity is embodied in the “flawless man” or what is referred to as the cosmic man who serves as its model; “unity of religions” which serves as a mechanism that enables its continuity; and finally, “religion of love” which represents its creed enabling the realisation of “the flawless man” and permiting the mechanism of the unity of religion to partake an active role.
The concept of “co-existence” is constructed through a spiritual and theological perspective that can take place only through unity.
In this paper, we elaborate this Sufist conceptualisation of “co-existence” through referring to three main points which construct “co-existence” as Ibn Arabi concetualised it.
These three points are as follow: pantheism, the flawless man and unity of religion.
