Fresh water is the lifeblood, and because of the importance of international watercourses as a freshwater resource, pollution in the use of it has serious dimensions.

For the purpose of establishing international legal rules regulating the sharing of water resources of international waterways and protecting them against pollution, many international conventions have been adopted which, together with other provisions, define international watercourses as well as the principles of protecting their environment.
