Abstract EN

This study has tried to provide a reading of a masterpiece of Arabic poetry, namely al-Buhtury's masterpiece in which he describes his meeting with the wolf.

the study presents a deep reading of the poem that goes beyond its external form, discussing and analyzing it, using all available tools.

the poem is over overloaded with meaning, and it allows different interpretations.

thus, this study has tried to achieve its goal of understanding the nature of the text.

even though the text is considered as a one—integrated and coherent—entity, it has been dissected into four portraits for the purpose of making it easier to study all its perspectives.

the portraits in the text are distributed in the following manner.

the first portrait is titled the ruins, and it effectively expresses the disturbed psychological state (of the poet).

the desert, background strongly suggests the separation of the i (the self) from the other (al-Buhtury and his relatives).

the second portrait is titled as the self (the i) inflated with egocentricity.

this portrait attempted to present the positive characteristics of the i including power, courage, and shrewdness.

the third portrait is titled as the portrait of the wolf—which is the other.

it provides a perfect description of the wolf/the other referring to its defeat in front of the powerful i.

it also presents the confrontation in which the i prevails—as it is the poet who defeated the other.

the final portrait is titled as the portrait of wisdom in which the poet summarized his own view of life and his relations to others.

the study has employed available approaches, but it focused on the analytic descriptive approach.
