Abstract EN

The media, at the local level, contributes to the development process through its prominent and active role in engaging people to participate in various events and activities.

First by informing them about social, economic and cultural issues and secondly by raising the intellectual level of the citizens in aim of stimulating their critical awareness.

By doing so, the media will nurture a spirit of participation and give an opportunity for the citizen to be part of the process.

There is a clear need for society to be kept informed in order for it to keep pace with the prevailing developmental programmes.

Moreover, there is a virtue in encouraging members of society to take an active part in the development process and galvanise their effort to create change as well as motivate them to improve their living environment.

Information has a dual responsibility in terms of transmitting and explaining the purpose of development as well as raising the needs and concerns of the citizens to the decision makers.

Since the basic requirement for any development depends upon the enpowerment of the people themselves, the media, in this instance, are the key element for implementing these much needed changes in society by the dissemination of information, opinions, ideas and beliefs.

Furthermore, the media are the best vehicle for introducing large audiences to modern lifestyles as well as making them aware of the causes and effects of stagnation and backwardness.
