Abstract EN

The way the 1950s ’ modern Arabic poetry movement of the 20th century evokes religious and legendary indications which center on the concepts of death, resurrection and immortality is what really singles it out.

This is not to mention its clear breaking of the classical «Khalilean» rhythm.

Perhaps the most prominent representation of the poetic, social, and political situation of the time was reflected in the two indications of Christ and his Cross.

To a large extent, the modern Arabic poetry movement represented a rebellion over the traditional, patriarchal authority (and what it entails in terms of religion, culture, and norms) and a declaration of the latter’s inability to fulfill the hopes of its followers.

That is how poets of modernity perceived Christian indications in a rebellious manner, with a psychological and cultural dimension.

It is worthwhile to note that the emergence of the two indications - Christ and his cross - which Youssef EUKhal had the most prominent role in introducing into modern Arabic poetry, was accompanied by a separation of the poets from their political parties and their ideological dogmas.

This is a brief expository study of the appearance of Christian symbols in modern Arabic poetry, of which the symbol of the Cross represented a great major propotion of the many other symbols whose effects were highlighted in the modern major Palestinian poem.
