Abstract EN

The text of the poem was written in the ninth century A.

H.

It represents one aspect of the intellectual and cultural life which was spread at that age.

Those ages were distinguished by their numerous styles of discovering new and novel arts of which debates and braggings became the milestone of that era.

The first attempts in these arts motivated the majority of poets to demonstrate their literary abilities and prove that they were artists.

Thus, before al-Bayadhi, Al-Saadi (d.

717 A.

H.) wrote a debate between the sword and the spear.

Then, Ibn Al-Werdi (749 A.

H.) wrote a debate between the sword and the pencil.

He was followed by Ibn Nebata Al-Mesri (768 A.

H.) in the same title.

Later, Al-Bistami (843 A.

H.) wrote a poem of bragging between Damascus and Cairo.

But those debates and braggings were written in prose.

That caused Al-Bayadhi to be distinguished from them by writing his debates in poetry.

And as far as the researcher knows, Al-Bayadhi is not preceded in this use in the literature of those times.

Also, the poem tells us about the religious life prevailed at that time where it contains debate, proofs-disclosing, and the use of mind to show the scientific and religious atmosphere in order to prove the Imamate of Ali (a.s.), Fatima (a.s.) and their Sons.

In addition to this, it reflects the method followed by men of letters of those ages in forming their literary works.

Their literature was based on recurred models of previous ages in eulogy as well as in rhetorical poems such as Al-Witri's poem named " The Odd Poem in Praising the Best of Meh' (d.

662 A.

H.) and the rhetorical poems of Safi Aldeen Al-Hilli (752 A.

H.) in the Prophetic commendation and others.

Showing this text to readers is considered as a complement to those texts taking debates as their subject.

Also, it sheds light on the poetry of those times which was locked on the shelves of libraries.
