Abstract EN
This experiment was conducted in the instructional field of the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of Sulaimani, Bakrajo, during the period March 15 to Novemver 1, 2010.
The purpose of this experiment was to study the range of response of some lawn grass species for the environmental conditions of Sulaymaniyah city through choosing two seed mixes of some lawn species grown in cold weather regions.
The first mix was composed of 40% Festuca arundinace, 25% Festuca arundinace, 20% Poa pratensis and 15% Cynodon dactylon seeds, while the second mix was composed of 55% Lolium perenne, 35% Poa pratensis, 5% Festuca rubra-corail and 5% Festuca rubrasamanta, in addition of using three vegetative grown species of hot weather grasses such as local grass Cynodon sp., Dicondra sp.
and Lippia sp.
as ready-made cuts (plugs).
The experiment was laid down in a randomized complete block design RCBD with for replications. The experiment results showed significant differences among species and varieties used in this study in their effects on vegetative growth, since there was a significant superiority of Cynodon over all the mixes of cold weather species as well as both Lippia and Dicondra in the length of runners.
Additionally, this species was significantly superior in the characteristics of root system (root depth, rhizome depth, depth of active roots) on the other studied species; the root system was arrived deeply into 100 cm downward.
Regarding other plant morphological characteristics, there were differences among all vegetative grown grass species under study in the required period for runner formation, it was found that Cynodon started forming runners after 17 days of planting, while Lippia started after 23 days and Dicondra after 29 days.
Cynodon was also superior in the period required for covering one square meter of land, this recorded 34 days, while the second order was gained by Lippia and then Dicondra which recorded 167 days.
