Abstract EN

Middle Paleolithic data in the region of Tebessa was restricted for many decades to the data from sites uncovered by Marius Latapie, Arthur Debruge and Maurice Reygasse over the first half of the twentieth century.

These initial investigations were completed by those of Jean Morel who apply a typological approach to lithic industries of stratified sites like Oued Djebbana, Oued Djouf el Djemel and Ain Mansoura.

Further surveys were initiated in the region since 2006 allowing the discovery of new sites in the Jebel Dyr and the region of El Ma Labiod–Safsaf el Ouesra.

Test pits and surface collecting were done at the rock-shelter of Oued Bousmane (Jebel Dyr) and the surface site of Birzgane (Safsaf el Ouesra).

Test pit of Oued Bousmane delivered a significant number of lithic artifacts distributed on four palaeolithic levels.

Levallois reduction is present at all levels while pedunculate are limited to the lower level.

A large sample of artefacts collected at the site of Birzgane showed common characteristics with the industries of Oued Bousmane.

The results of the lithic analysis of industries of the two sites reveal significant differences with the most known industries of the region of Tebessa.
