The International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) is an institution grouping countries as well as various territories one or two other languages.
In some countries, such as the countries of the Mediterranean basin, which practice a policy of arabization, French enjoys great social prestige.
In these countries French was introduced by the colonization.
It is acquired and lived as a second language used by the international or regional organizations or taught in public and private schools.
This phenomenon is spreading to the whole planet with the exception of Iraq.
The introduction of French in Iraq is not a new phenomenon.
It is actually a very old phenomenon.
No research looks into this subject.
Thus this study is interested in this phenomenon.
It will capture the historical, geopolitical and socio-economic issues related to the status of French in Mesopotamia.
We will see how these issues shaped the sociolinguistic situation in Iraq.

L'Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) est une institution regroupant les pays indépendants ainsi que de territoires divers où le français est une langue officielle ou co-officielle au côté d'une ou deux autres langues.
Dans certains pays tels les pays du bassin méditerranéen qui pratiquent une politique d’arabisation le français bénéficie d'un grand prestige social.
Dans ces pays le français a été introduit par le fait de la colonisation.
Il y est acquis et y vécu comme langue seconde utilisée dans le cadre des organismes internationaux spécialisées ou régionales ou enseignée dans des établissements scolaires du public et du privé.
Ce phénomène s'étend et se généralise à l'ensemble de la planète à l’exception de l’Irak.
L’introduction du français en Irak n'est pas un phénomène nouveau.
Elle représente en réalité un phénomène très ancien.
Nulle recherche se penche sur ce sujet.
Ainsi cette étude s'intéresse à ce phénomène.
Elle saisira les enjeux historiques, géopolitique et socio-économiques reliés au statut du français dans la Mésopotamie.
Nous allons voir comment ces enjeux ont façonné la situation sociolinguistique irakienne.
