Abstract EN

This essay will argue that Roland Barthes’s essay “The Death of the Author” offers a crucial understanding of a literary text, not with regard to external circumstances surrounding the text, but ultimately in terms of the inherent values of the work.

In this sense, Barthes’s essay demands the liberation of the text from the traditional shackles that bind it to the literary analytical horizon, in spite of the many voices that oppose Barthes’s rejection of the dead author.

I will try to contrast my approach with other methods commonly used in reading literature, such as ideological reading, intentional investigation, autobiography, and historical and social interpretations.

“The Death of the Author” dramatically contests what Barthes believed to be the invalid norms of approaching a text.

This essay will first introduce the previous efforts inviting to disappearance of the author that appeared before Barthes, second will discuss the necessity of the death of the author demanded by other discourses beyond Barthes’s own, such as the schools of formalism and new criticism.

Later, I will discuss the advantages of seeing an author as outside the critical operation of the text, assessing the argument that ideological readings, intentional interpretation and personality should no longer be used in analyzing texts, and that the only valid approach is focusing on the inherent qualities of the work itself.

In addition, certain counter-arguments to those ideas will be examined in the course of the essay, such as the dilemma of the death of the author and, by implication, the death of God.
