Abstract EN

Both past and present Studies have been arguing the issue of "the text" and "the speech" for it is, in fact, a terminological problem that associates the choice of one term over the other with the meaning it conveys.

Despite the scholars' efforts and attempts to sort out this issue from a logical and scientific approach, no radical solution seems to be reached.

It could be claimed that the reason behind this confusion lies in the fact that the two terms share many characteristics in addition to the random usage of these terms by some researchers that may be ignorant of the difference in meaning or that this different does not matter to them at the time they use it.

Based on what has been said, this issue has been a significant part in many linguistic research works in the past, yet it still raises conflict in the present times in the Arab and foreign linguistic research; hence the research problem of this article.

In this research paper, we are attempting to cover the dichotomy "text/speech" with the aim to answer some important questions and figure out which the original among the two terms is.

The research questions are: "Is there actually a difference between a 'text' and a 'speech'? If so, shoud each term be a separate independant science with distinct rules, objectives and characteristics?"
