Abstract EN

The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of using written journals on mathematics achievement among students of the preparatory programs in Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University.

Quasi-experimental design was used in this study.

The study sample included seventy-three students divided into two groups; an experimental group (35 students) and a control group (38 students).

Experimental group students used written journals in studying mathematics whereas those of the control group did not use the journals.

Lecturing was used with both groups.

An achievement test that consisted of 16 questions was built and validated in order to measure the impact of using written journals on students’ knowledge, comprehension and problem solving.

Results showed significant differences at the level of (α = 0.05) in knowledge, understanding and problem solving and in academic achievement as a whole between the mean scores of the control and experimental group students in favor of those of the experimental group.

Written journals are recommended to be used in teaching and learning of mathematics in math classes in Saudi Arabia.
