Abstract EN

The present study aims to identify the level of linguistic processing skills and mathematical communication skills of first year secondary school students, clarify differences in linguistic processing skills and mathematical communication skills according to the sex and understand the nature of the relation between linguistic processing skills, mathematical communication skills and ability to solve mathematical verbal problems.

The sample of the study consisted of (89) males, (65) females from first grade secondary school student.

Three measures were prepared and applied : linguistic processing skills scale, an observation checklist of mathematical communication skills and verbal mathematical problem solving test.

Descriptive method and one sample t-test, multivariate analysis of variance and Pearson correlation coefficient were used.

The results showed that the level of first year secondary students is above average in lexical and Syntactic processing, and below average in pragmatic, and Equal to the average in the semantic and total score of linguistic processing in general.

For mathematical communication skills, the level of students in : speaking, reading, writing skills are average.

While in : listening, representation skills and the total score are below average.

There are no differences between male and female students in : listening, speaking of mathematical communication skills.

But there are differences in : speaking, reading and writing skills as well as the total score for female students.

There are differences between male and female students in all linguistic processing skills for the females.

There is significant positive correlation between linguistic processing skills and mathematical communication skills in most skills and mathematical verbal problems in all skills and total score for male and female.

In light of the results some recommendations and researches were suggested.
