Abstract EN

The French Colonial tide was in parallel with the military resistance in Algeria, as a natural population‘s response against anyone who attacks its land and harms its Islamic components.

While the French occupation was transitory and gradual across the Algerian regions, the National Resistance was active at the same level, guided by national leaders.

Those latter were characterized by their religious influence as Associates (Morabitines), or by their political authority; like the tribes’ elders who rejected that foreign presence and expressed it under the banner of Holy Jihad (Holy Fight) to defend their political and religious entity, represented in the two main elements : "Tribe" and "Zawya"(Oratory).

Therefore, due to those two factors, the efforts of Algerians as individuals were united under the banner of National Resistance in different regions.

Some of them were locations of revolution declarations, however; others contributed to the revolution expansion.

Thus, Saida was one of those areas because of its strategic geographical location, and its population‘s nature that had a crucial role in the military resistance.

Its tribes showed their support and loyalty to all the revolutions that occurred in the western region.

Therefore, this paper aims to deal with the following problem: how did Saida, as a human and geographic framework, contribute to the National Resistance in the 19th century?" And to what extent did that role impede the project of French Colonial expansion?
