Pre-Islamic Arabic poems used to be introduced with a stanza in which the poet deplores memories about his tribe, this deploring stanza is widespread in Arabic poetry, and constituted a fertile subject for criticism and interpretations.

The sociological approach attempted to interpret this poetic act by linking its appearance in the poem by the Arabic way of life based on nomadism that was due to the Saharian environment.

"Youcef Khelif" adopted the sociological approach to study the Pre-Islamic Arabic poetry in his book «studies in the Pre-Islamic Arabic poetry», and in a number of other studies.
