Abstract EN

The use of the private military companies in peace keeping operations is a relatively new practice .

This had appeared as a result of the United Nations (UN) inability to provide the necessary security protection for its officials, in addition to other reasons .

The size of peace keeping operations had enormously enlarged in comparison to the cold war era, when the number of peace keeping troops was not exceeding 10 000 persons around the world, it reached to 100 000 in 1993.

This was reflected on the UN expenditure on these operations .

Before 1990, it was not exceeding 400 million dollars, while it was increased to 4 billion after 1993 which means a 10 times rise.

The nature and quality of these operations was changed too.
