Abstract EN

The purpose of Qur'an in narrating the stories of ancient people is to train followers and to focus their attention on the source of creation, hereafter, refinement of soul and perfection.

Thus, narration of ancient stories performs an educational function.

At any appropriate circumstance, Qur'an pursues this ultimate cause and delivers beneficent notifications to the followers.

Within the framework of narratology theories and following a descriptive-analytical method, this article aims to analyze the story of Prophet Yusuf at two levels of narration and discourse.

At the narration level, Toolan and Martin’s theories are employed to investigate the chain of integrated events, the way the crisis forms, and the process of crisis resolution, and Greimas’s model is utilized to explore the role of characters in the development of the story and their relationships with the narrative context.

At the discourse level, Roger Fowler’s ‘narrative perspective’ is drawn on to explore the position of God as the narrator, the narrator's relationship with and attitude toward the characters and their impact on the narration process.
