Abstract EN

Ibn Arabi paid great deal of attention to “metaphysics” for he believed that it provided a methodological foundation and an epistemological basis for his construction of a Sufist vision to the problematic of “Unity of Existence”.

The necessity of metaphysics lies in the fact that “unity” is metaphysical in essence.

In this context, since metaphysics is basically philosophical, Ibn Arabi attempted to transfer the concept of unity from its philosophical context to a Sufist one.

This attempt led to the creation of Islamic metaphysics which the “principal of contradiction” served as its foundation and “separate imagination” (or known as metaphysical imagination which its source is divine) its methodological mechanism for the interpretation of its issues.

Doing this, Ibn Arabi succeeded in making an epistemological rupture.

In other words, he managed to strip metaphysics from to its philosophical foundation and the concept of exclusion of contradiction which this former is based on, only to create a Sufist metaphysics.

With this regards, Ibn Arabi rejected a mechanism of interpretation which the mind could use.

That being said, Ibn Arabi’s rejection to philosophy did not exempted him from using it.

In this sense, he used its concepts (emanation, unity, plurality, existence, nothingness…) only to make metaphysics loaded with Sufist conceptualisation.

This Sufist conceptualisation of metaphysics created a Sufist philosophy and a philosophised Sufism, a discipline which its pivotal problematic is: “unity of existence”, a problematic which the Sufist philosophy of Ibn Arabi aimed to discuss.
