Abstract EN

Since the beginning of the French occupation of Algeria, the colonial administration has sought to attract European elements to the colony, with the aim of forming a support force for the army and a key mechanism of eternal annexation.

From the colony to Metropolis.

The administration, having failed to attract immigrants from North European countries (Germany, Switzerland, Ireland ...), was faced with a different reality, with the influx of immigrants from the south from Europe that did not wish to Mainly from neighboring Spain, as well as from Spain and Malta, but to a lesser extent.

The colonial administration was forced to manage the status quo and rely on the immigrants available to concretize its settlement project in Algeria, using these immigrants as support and employment, particularly to strengthen the French colonies.

The colonial administration thought it could control these immigrants, by their distribution on the ground, their cultural influence in the colony and their political framework.

However, the reality proved to be contrary: the Spaniards, the most important European element in Algeria after the French, have posed many problems to the colonizer, on more than one level: cultural and political in particular.
