The quantitative changes which grow more and more numerous in popular Latin serve as a proof of the existence of a rythmical factor which shortens the ultra-long syllables created by the dropping of unstressed vocals into canonic duration syllables.
That autocorrection phenomenon of the language, which is a proof of permanency of the long/short syllable opposition, is one of the manifestations of the general phonetics law called Osthoff’s Law.

Les changements quantitatifs qui se multiplient en bas latin attestent l’existence d’un facteur rythmique qui ramène les syllabe ultra longues résultant de la chute des voyelles atones à une durée canonique.
Ce phénomène d’autorégulation de la langue qui prouve la permanence de l’opposition longues/brèves est une des manifestations de la loi de phonétique générale appelée Loi d’Osthoff.
