Abstract EN

This Paper addressed the joining of the Sudan to the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as the expected impacts on the country’s exports, imports, industrial sector and national economy.

The paper aimed at evaluating these impacts scientifically to determine the importance of joining the WTO, while determining the procedures and recommendations that should be implemented in order to overcome the obstacles that impede Sudan from joining the organization.

To achieve the objectives of the paper, a descriptive methodology had been adopted based on the secondary sources of data.

The paper concludes that the technical and commercial restrictions imposed on the member countries by the WTO, and the International Standardization Organization, and the strict application of such restrictions, will have a negative effect on the volume of exports, and thus on both the trade balance and the balance of payments.

Furthermore, the paper expects the prices of the Sudanese imports particularly the basic food stuffs to rise following the joining of the organization, and the implementation of the agriculture agreement, which calls for the opening of markets and cancellation of subsidies to the agricultural sector of the exporting countries, thus paving the way for the costs of production and prices of imports in these countries to rise.

The paper recommends the uplifting of the agricultural sector by turning it from the traditional agriculture in small areas and little production to modern large size and intensive capital agriculture; besides the solution of all problems associated with the agricultural projects.

Moreover, the paper recommends the upgrading of the industries in which Sudan has competitive advantages along with formulation of a sophisticated program for the economic reform to help the national economy keep pace with and confront the circumstances of joining the organization.
