Soil salinity and water salinity is one of the most vital problems facing the agriculture sector in many regions, Therefore, identification of salinity tolerant genotypes is critical to improve crop productivity.

A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of 9 genotypes of hard wheat genotypes (Triticum durum Desf) to different levels of salinity.

Experiments were carried according to randomized complete design with three replications.

Wheat seeds were grown in Petri dishes containing filter paper.

The seeds were treated with different concentrations of saline solution (0, 50, 100 and 150 mM NaCl).

The dishes were kept in the dark at room temperature at 25 ° C for 8 days.

During this period, water or saline solution were added to all dishes.

Data on germination were collected during this period.

After 8 days of sowing, the experiment was terminated and data on final germination percentage, germination rate, mean daily germination, shoot and root length, fresh and dry seedling weight were collected.

The results showed that the response of genotypes to the salinity were different at concentrations higher than 100 mM NaCl.

The germination rate and the average daily germination decreased.

The final germination per cent decreased in most of the genotypes compared to the control.

The results also displayed that at the higher level of salinity (150 mM NaCl), the length of the seedling, root, dry weight and seedling vigor index decreased.

Also, the results indicated that salinity affected root growth more strongly than shoot growth and salinity was more pronounced on dry weight of the seedlings.

The study recommended that the adoption of dry weight, root length and seedling vigor as good criteria for testing the tolerance of different wheat genotypes to salinity a germination stage.
