Abstract EN

This study explores a new dimension in linguistic use, how Arabic is used in social media especially twitter, and discusses social functions to diglossic code switching between standard Arabic and Saudi dialects.

Within the boundaries of linguistic levels drawn by Charles Ferguson 1959 for Arabic diglossia, and within the major language functions set by him for each level, it investigates the issue of linguistic selection including; expressionism, influence, utilitarian, organisational, interactive and personal which were all mentioned through social functions and motives, and all of which are within the boundaries and framework of the main language functions mentioned by Ferguson 1959 of the Arabic language.

Furthermore, it dealt within a written and specific framework which changed through social media in the light of three social variables: sex variable, education, and subject.

The study extracts a group of functions for diglossic code switching of the written speech in twitter and compared it with other functions of verbal interaction as shown by the literatures.

The social functions of the use of switching to the standard Arabic in the written discourse branched into five functions: a statement of prestige, sophistication and development, statement of the importance of discourse, quotation to highlight the seriousness and provide formulations of official expressions and finally theorizing and preaching.
