Abstract EN

In the late nineteenth century, Guatemala came under the reign of a series of dictators whose primary concern was to maintain their rule and reinforce their authority, by granting many concessions to the American companies which monopolized numerous vital sectors of the Guatemalan economy.

Consequently, Guatemala has suffered most during this period from many economic, social and political crises.

By the same token, its economy slid backward and lagged behind since it depended merely on the export of one agricultural product “Coffee”.

On the social level, the Guatemalan social system was predominantly feudal; that is, a small group of oligarchs exercise their influence and power over their people.

To maintain their power, the dictators who ruled Guatemala were fully ready to sacrifice anything even if it was the sovereignty of their country.

All these circumstances paved the way for the Guatemalan Revolution in 1944 which, in turn, represented a crucial issue for the United States of America, especially with its economic, political and strategic interests in Guatemala.
