This study deals with an important and critical period in the international relations.

On July 26 1956, President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalization the Suez Canal, The Italian view did not object Egypt's right to own the Canalbut the Italians insisted on guaranteeing freedom of navigation through the canal.

Thus, Italian diplomacy faced a very embarrassing situation, as it is one of the Mediterranean countries on the one hand, and its membership in the Atlantic Alliance on the other, Italy was concerned about its interests in case of stopping or interrupting navigation through the Canal which may damage its economy , Also it was concerned about its nationals in Egypt.

Italy sought to reach a peaceful solution to the Suez crisis, and in the meantime, it tried to appear as a trusted mediator, because it had no special interest in the Canal like England and France.

Italy’s position appeared as a way of satisfying the West, but in reality it was a mere concern about its interests in Egypt.

This was clear in Italy‘s stance in taking no military measures against Egypt or imposing no sanction on it.
