Abstract EN

The foundation of the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulama in 1931 was a stark proclamation to the colonial administration that the national spirit and the religious identity of Algerian people were not lost.

Their association had basically the aim of a return to the real Islamic instructions practices, that are free from superstitions, legends and myths, following mystical ways which were widespread traditions and cults far from the Islamic religion.

The strange thing is that the French administration did encourage those practices as they served its purposes.If Algerians got far from their religion, many of its politics will be easily realised, as the adherence and the fusion in the European civism.

For this purpose, the association sought to face up the Sufi ‘’ Marabout‘’ infiltration by spreading out free Arab education and teaching the principles of Islamic religion all over the Algerian territories.

In our study, we will shed light on the activities of the association in Nedroma city, famous for its different mystical ways .In spite of its small surface, Nedroma was known for the multitude of its ‘’Zaouias‘’ and ‘’Quibab’’ that were following the mystic ways as the ‘’Chadli’’, ‘’Derquawia’’and ‘’Taibia’’.

All this was challenging the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulama .

the latter had to change the minds of those people who were so much tied to sufism and who were sanctifying its ‘Sheikhs’ i.e.

leaders.

What was then the effect of the association on the city and what was the reaction of the French administration to it?
