Análisis comparativo de la cobertura mediática sobre el referéndum para la ratificación de la constitución Argelina del 28 de Noviembre de 1996 en los diarios le monde y El Mundo

Abstract EN

This paper targets to investigate the media treatment and coverage for the adoption of the Constitution of the 28th November 1996 in Algeria, via two foreign newspapers “Le Monde” (French) and “El Mundo” (Espanola).

First we realized a quantitative analysis to identified and categorize all the published articles in the two dailies that cover and treaty the various referendum campaign stages during this phase.

Then we relate and compare the regularity, frequency and volumes of published articles.

In second part, we consider a qualitative study.

In this fragment, we analyzed the articles contents in order to the representations and positions of the newspapers relative to the referendum subject.

Indeed, it is worth noting, that “Le Monde” newspaper presents twice coverage as high as “El Mundo” newspaper and 1.35 times larger area than the “El Mundo” newspaper.

Moreover, the two dailies provide critical feelings on the major amendments if they are defer to the referendum.

They also relay recurrently the positions and the perceptions of the opposition parties, fundamentally the 1989 amendments rejection of the Constitution reforming the electoral system and prohibiting the use of religion for political ends.

According to the two newspapers, the high voter turnout proclaimed by the government does not seem to correspond to reality.

Journalists express negative opinions about authority, principally their failure to implement a policy allowing the opposition to associate in order to restore peace and security in the country.

The referendum is also perceived as an authoritarian and anti-democratic procedure.
