Abstract EN

With respect tothe phonemic formation of the Root, semitic languages as (akkadian and Hebrew) are divided into two major types, each of which has its own subdivisions,Strong Verbs: Those are the verbs of which no radical is a /w/ or IYI.

Weak Verbs (Defective): Those are the verbs of which one (or two) of the radicals is a /w/ or /y/ (or an ? alif /a/ according to some views)*.

In this respect and for this reason they differ phonologically and inflectionally from the strong verbs in general, but particularly they differ from the 'sound verbs' in lways having one of the radicals subject to elision or alteration.

Weak verbs are of four different kinds, varying accordingto the position of the approximant (/w/ or /y/), being initial, medial, final, or a combination of the final position with the initial or themedial: However, despite the importance of the contrasting views, it is of vital ignificance here to acknowledge- for the time being - the traditional hypothetical base imperative form of weakverbs for the sake of the construction of our grammatical rules.

Inother words forms of weak verbs will be represented when required inthe 'limitation component' by their roots, with the hypothetical /w/ and /y/ being untransformed.

This representation of the 'limitation component' is of exceptional significance in the case of weak verbs which undergo a number of operations which are characteristic of this type of verb
