The principle of democratic legitimacy refers to the general characterization of elections that respect the standards of democracy and assumes that the majority opinion is in the public interest.

The development of the principle has led to the emergence of a new concept of the right to internal self-determination, which in its broad interpretation would mean the right of peoples to take advantage from the benefits of liberal democracy within the framework of the rule of law, thereby enhancing the inalienable right of each State to freely choose its political system.
