Abstract EN

Rithā’ (elegy) is a significant genre of Arabic poetry.

In fact, it is main genre of Arabic poetry in terms of sincerity, expression and accuracy.

Arabic literature retains a huge heritage of elegies since the time of Jaahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period) till the present day.

Elegiac poetry is the most emotional genre of Arabic poetry because it depends on sincere feelings and expressions.

A poet can never produce a good elegy unless there is a direct relationship between the poet and the dead person.

Elegiac poetry stems from the heart so that words and meter work together exquisitely giving the poem its own elegance.

Al-Aqqad criticized neo-classical poets or the "Revivalists" for their interest in the poetry of fora and events, because such poetry, according to him, is devoid of self-expression and lacks sincerity of expression.

However, Al-Aqqad himself wrote elegies for al-Mazini, Saad Zaghloul, Sultan Hussein, Mei Ziadah, and the strangest poem of all is that he wrote for his dog (Peugeot) which made one critic write an article entitled "A Wonderful Poem and A Dead Dog".

Now, the question is, why did Al-Aqqad address these issues? Was he trying to show the truthfulness of his passion and experience against lack of senciere passion in the poetry of the "Revivalists" – especially Shawki's? Was he trying to express the extent of his rebellion against the methods of the modern poem and reveal his ability to articulate old topics in a new form that is different from the way of his predecessors?
