Abstract EN

This study aims at identifying the impact of privatization on unemployment in Jordan.

To this end, the researcher chose a sample of 14 governmental companies that were privatized, and compared the number of the companies’ layoffs prior to and after privatization.

The study shows that Privatization led to an increase in the number of unemployed people in Jordan.

About 18% of workers in the companies in question were laid off.

Those companies had (22786) employees before privatization, but the number declined to (18644) after privatization, which means that about (4142) workers lost their jobs.

The study concludes with a number of recommendations that aim at minimizing the negative effect of privatization on unemployment.

These recommendations include: taking a gradual approach to applying privatization, solving the problem of overstaffing first, making use of other countries’ privatization experience, and allocating some of the privatization revenues to train and rehabilitate the laid-off
