Abstract EN

This study aims at investigating the phenomenon of replacing the bilabial approximant "waw" by the glottal stop "hamza" in the medial consonant of the triliteral roots.

The study is concerned with this phenomenon when it occurs in the medial consonant that it is followed by fatha, i.e., the lax front open unrounded vowel, and which cannot be due to morphological causes.

Some linguists deny this replacement process and describe it as rare and irregular.

Some restrict it to the following three examples only: [ > anāh], [ > aḥad], and [> asmā > ] from [wanāh], [waḫad], and [wasmā> ] respectively which seems to be an imprecise stand point.

This study strives to analyze the first example [> anāh] and some other examples the study came across.

It is concluded that, based on inference criteria, the replacement of "waw" by hamza or "hamza" by "waw" process is active in these examples, or that each one of them is a separate root based on the meaning and how commonly or rarely the form is used.

The study found through search and investigation a good number of examples in which this replacement process takes place.

All these examples apply this process in the second consonant of the root when followed by fatḥa.

This rebuts the argument of those who deny the occurrence of replacement in these examples or describe it as rare and irregular, or those who attribute this process to the weakness of "waw" since it is subject to deletion and replacement and the clarity and solidity of "hamza".

This is so since the reverse occurs when the more solid hamza was replaced by the weaker "waw" as in [wākala] and [wāḫaḏa] from [ >ākala] and [ >āḫaḏa] which was attested in Yemeni Arabic or the variety of Arabic spoken by the tribe of (ṭayy).
