Field sun eys were conducted along the coastal areas of Svria during l99l-92 and 1992-93 growing seasons.

Svmptoms of viral infections tvere observed on cultivated and rvild legumes.

Serological testes (ELISA) were carried out on1382 samples collected of both cultivated and wild legumes.

these samples shou,ed some visual symptoms of viral infection.

results obtained from using l l antisera identified a number of viruses that naturally infect these legumes.

these viruses were: faba bean necrotic yellows virus (FBNY$, bean yellow mosaic virus (BYI\4V).

beet western yellorvs virus (BWY$.

broad bean stain virus (BBS9, chickpea luteovirus (CPLV).

bean leaf roll virus (BLRD, broad bean mottle virus(BBMV).

cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), alfalfa mosaic virus(AM\l).

broad bean rvilt virus (BBW\|) and pea seed- borne mosaic virus (PSbMV).

FBNYV was the most commonly encountcred virus follou'ed by BYi\4V.

natural infection of a number of cultivated and r,vild legumes was recorded for the first time in Syria.
