Abstract EN

Bab al-Tawfiq is one of the gates of Islamic Cairo, in the second eastern wall, used as a part of the defensive system of the city, and discovered in 1957.

The name of the gate did not mentioned in the Arabic historical sources, although it is written above the gate, while the archaeological studies have shown that the gate known as Bab al-Barqiyya.

By coincidence, there are three gates known as Bab al-Barqiyya in the walls of Cairo, built during the Fatimid and Ayyubid periods.

Therefore, it was difficult to determine the position of Bab al-Tawfiq, and to state which one of the three gates is the authentic Bab al-Tawfiq, so it remained a major debate until recent time.

In this paper, we conclude from the opinions of the researchers the location of Bab al-Tawfiq, we would also shed light on its architectural composition and the use of Pharaonic blocks in its masonry.
