Abstract EN

This study traces the term Circumlocution (iTnaab) in the most important rhetorical books since its inception and finds a great disagreement among scholars on the definition of Circumlocution, its branches, its related terms and instances.

The study explores the efforts of some late rhetoricians in employing grammatical criteria as an aid to reach a consensus on establishing a well-defined means to delimit Circumlocution and set its branches apart.

However, those efforts are found to be inadequate due to the proliferation, overlapping and close affinities of Circumlocution branches.

The study argues that a reliance on syntax – the twin of rhetoric- would be more effective if it were used to elaborate meaning and rhetoric rather than to defend an unnecessary myriad of Circumlocution branches.

Similarly, more efforts should be devoted to address the rhetorical features and elegance of Circumlocution branches.
