Abstract EN

The Desert Locust, an acridid transboundary pest, remains a major threat to agriculture and pastureland in certain parts of Africa, the Near East and South-West Asia.

Conscious of the importance of the co-operation in the monitoring and control against this plague, the concerned countries and FAO created, since the beginning of second half of the twentieth century, the Desert Locust Control Committee (DLCC), and after that three regional commissions: the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in South-West Asia, in Near East and in North-West Africa.

Thereafter, the names of these Commissions or their zone of action has been changed to make them in accordance with the Desert Locust breeding areas which are respectively the Eastern, Central and Western area.

It was also created the Emergency Prevention System for Transboundary Animal and Plant Pests and Diseases (EMPRES-Desert Locust Component) and his regional coordination’s.

This effort aims at the reinforcement of the preventive control of the Desert Locust in the medium- to long term
