Abstract EN

The associative movement in the city of Laayoune (the largest city in the Sahara) knows a dynamic and remarkable vitality, Observed in the continuously increasing number of associations from 75 in 1995 to more than 2,000 in 2016.

This quantitative development is attributed to political, economic, social and cultural factors related to historic moments that played a major role in shaping the territorial sphere and leaving an indelible mark on the region.

This paper entitled "The associative Movement in Sahrawi Cities: Between Identification and Attempts to Emancipation: the Case of Laayoune City" seeks to answer a fundamental question: To what extent the associative movement of Laayoune city in its development paths can be free from identification and subordination (the state / Tribe / party / regional affiliation / identity affiliation) and constitute an independent and distinct civilian identity ? In order to answer this question, we will describe the paths of growth and development of the associative movement as well as its analysis and interpretation, highlighting the contexts and causes of this development in a way that allows us to identify the basic characteristics of the associative life in the city of Laayoune.

The paper uses multiple approaches (historical, descriptive, statistical, analytic) as well as a field-work that is conducted in the city of Laayoune for a range of considerations (depth and speed of transformation, population growth, influence and leverage of this territorial sphere…).
