Abstract EN

This paper is a comparative study between Sufi mystical love and ‘udhri love (ideal or Platonic love).

It focuses on the meaning of love in common language and as a technical term, and on the three different kinds of love that can be found in Sufi philosophy: natural love, spiritual love and divine love as they have been exposed in the works of Ibn Arabi and Abu- Madyan Attalmasani.

This study presents the influence of ‘udhri love poets on Sufism, which used of their terms and transformed them into Gnostic symbols far from human and mundane meanings.

The terms referring to love can be divided into two groups: in the first are included the terms used by ‘udhri poets whose love is earthly and human, while in the second are found terms used by Sufis, whose love is Divine and its object is the Divine essence.

Examples are drawn from Sufi poets like Ibn al-Faridh and Ibn Arabi, but especially from the poems of Abu-Madyan Attalmasani.
